Capped Bust Quarter
The quarter denomination saw the resumption of production following an eight year hiatus with the
Capped Bust Quarter
series. The design was notably different from the early quarter
dollars, which had been struck in limited quantities. Although mintage’s
for the new series were more plentiful, it can still be a challenge for
collectors to find examples in mint state grades. In 1831, the diameter
of the denomination was reduced and the design was slightly altered,
creating two sub-types for the series.
Designer: John Reich (variety 1), William Kneass (variety 2)
Weight: 6.74 grams (changed to 6.68 grams in 1837)
Composition: .8924 silver, .1076 copper, (changed to .900 Fine in 1837)
Diameter: 27 mm (variety 1), 24.3 mm (variety 2)
Edge: Reeded
